She was expert in Octal, and knew that octal numerals can be made from binary by grouping consecutive binary digits into groups of three (starting from the right). She was using that to solve the problem that could save Earth.
A pity that her magnetism was distorting the monitor!

Lost In Space

Close call with that meteor last week!

Yes, but have you seen this weird craft under the tree?  There’s a canister just by the open door. Let’s look inside!

What’s this? A short story by the looks of it. Written by Peter’s pondering.

Firstly here is Kat’s own story.

The Lottery

The lottery was held a week before the meteor collision. One million souls would be selected, with the winners being notified privately.

Days passed and neighbor’s eyed each other suspiciously. But no one seemed to have made the cut. No one, but the leaders and their families.

I thought that I would add to this:

The Jackpot

They approached the Sun to use the slingshot effect to set course for Alpha 7, and a new life.

Alarms sounded! 

They were being dragged into the fiery hell, and nothing they did had any effect.

Back on Earth, everyone breathed a huge sigh of relief as the meteor passed safely by.

“Be your own boss.” they said.

“Choose your own hours.” they said.

“Meet lots of interesting people.” they said.

“Your earnings will double from the word go.” they said.

What they didn’t say was that I would spend the greater part of every damned day stuck in downtown traffic!

The contrail had been there for 3 days.

Mike had to take a sample to see why it failed to dissipate.

As they approached, he could see that it was made up of tiny ant like creatures.

He felt a bite on his wrist, and screamed in horror as they started to devour him, and the aircraft!

I had difficulty this week in coming up with a tale that I was happy with. In the course of trying, I discovered that  a coarse sand grain may have a diameter of 1/20th of an inch. A first-order approximation of the number of grains of sand in one cubic inch (assuming cubic arrangement, spherical grains, uniformly sized) would be 20 x 20 x 20, or 8,000.

I am still managing to learn new things, even at my vast age! Use this information wisely folks.

Instead of a tale I imagined all of the difficulties of keeping the family happy, and entertained, on a crowded beach.

She collected, and bred, carnivorous plants all her life, and was considered an expert.
She thought she had every type until offered a gigantic pitcher plant she had never seen before.
She was delighted with the new acquisition, and decided to name it after the donor, Herman Trapp!

Same house,
same party,
same day,
same time.
Every year!

Same laughs,
same jokes,
same lives,
same folks.
Very queer!

Same food,
same plates,
same drinks,
same mates.
Full of cheer!

Not the same,
we died that day,
we come forlorn,
and not to play,

but

shed a tear!

Simon forced his eyelids apart, licked his dry lips, and looked down, with a sigh, at his wallet, now devoid of cash!

The last thing he remembered was staggering out of the club.

He looked up, and could see, immediately, that he and the Beetle had an identical problem.

Piston broke!

If you have to explain a joke, it ceases to be a joke, but I’ll risk that.

In British English:

“Pissed” does not mean “very annoyed”, but it does mean “drunk”.

“Broke” means “having completely run out of money”.

There, one joke ruined, just like the piston!
