Song Lyric Sunday – 3 October 2021 – I Gotta Feeling

Jim Adams’ Song Lyric Sunday gives us the chance to share familiar, and sometimes not so familiar, songs. This week the prompt is to find a song where somebody is having sex, or talking, or hinting about having it. If you fancy sharing one of your favourite songs you can find out how to participate, and also listen to all the great entries, here.

Now, come on Jim, you ought to know better than this.  You know very well that many of us have high blood pressure and cannot afford to get over excited.  However, I’ll do my best to remain calm.

My very first thought was The Beatles “Why Don’t You Do It In The Road” which Paul McCartney wrote after seeing two monkeys copulating in the street while on retreat in Rishikesh, India, with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. He marvelled in the simplicity of this natural scenario when compared to the emotional turmoil of human relationships. You can listen to that song here.

That is not the song on offer this week.  Instead, I am presenting the Black Eyed Peas singing I Gotta Feeling. It is not a song I’m familiar with, but it seems to fit the prompt.

The video features guest appearances by Katy PerryDavid GuettaKid Cudi, members of the indie rock band Gossip, the designer duo Dean and Dan Catenof Dsquared and RuPaul’s Drag Race alumni Ongina.

To be perfectly honest, I am unsettled by this video. To my mind it is blatantly sexist and I can’t help but feel that the majority of ladies/girls featured are being exploited for their sexiness, albeit many, if not the majority, will be willing participants in the venture.  I just don’t know.  Perhaps I’m getting old and grumpy!

Anyway, the music is quite good.  I hope you enjoy it.

I Gotta Feeling

Black Eyed Peas

I got a feeling
That tonight’s gonna be a good night
That tonight’s gonna be a good night
That tonight’s gonna be a good, good night

A feeling
That tonight’s gonna be a good night
That tonight’s gonna be a good night
That tonight’s gonna be a good, good night

A feeling (woo-hoo)
That tonight’s gonna be a good night
That tonight’s gonna be a good night
That tonight’s gonna be a good, good night

A feeling (woo-hoo)
That tonight’s gonna be a good night
That tonight’s gonna be a good night
That tonight’s gonna be a good, good night

Tonight’s the night, let’s live it up
I got my money, let’s spend it up (fee-)
Go out and smash it, like “Oh my God”
Jump out that sofa, let’s kick it, off (fee-)

I know that we’ll have a ball
If we get down and go out, and just lose it all
I feel, stressed out, I wanna let it go
Let’s go way out, spaced out, and losin’ all control

Fill up my cup, mazel tov
Look at her dancin’, just take it, off (fee-)
Let’s paint the town, we’ll shut it down
Let’s burn the roof, and then we’ll do it again

Let’s do it, let’s do it, let’s do it, let’s do it
And do it, and do it, let’s live it up
And do it, and do it, and do it, do it, do it
Let’s do it, let’s do it, let’s do it

‘Cause I gotta feeling (woo-hoo)
That tonight’s gonna be a good night
That tonight’s gonna be a good night
That tonight’s gonna be a good, good night

A feeling (woo-hoo)
That tonight’s gonna be a good night
That tonight’s gonna be a good night
That tonight’s gonna be a good, good night

Tonight’s the night (hey), let’s live it up (let’s live it up)
I got my money (I’m paid), let’s spend it up (let’s spend it up)
Go out and smash it (smash it), like “Oh my God” (like “Oh my God!”)
Jump out that sofa (come on), let’s kick it, off (fee-)

Fill up my cup (drink), mazel tov (l’chaim)
Look at her dancing (move it, move it), just take it, off (fee-)
Let’s paint the town (paint the town), we’ll shut it down (shut it down)
Let’s burn the roof (ooh-woo), and then we’ll do it again

Let’s do it, let’s do it, let’s do it, (Let’s do it) let’s do it
And do it (do it), and do it, let’s live it up
And do it (do it), and do it (and do it)
And do it, do it, do it (and do it)
Let’s do it (and do it), let’s do it (and do it)
Let’s do it (hey), do it (hey), do it (hey), do it

Here we come, here we go, we gotta rock
Easy come, easy go, now we on top
Feel the shot, body rock, rock it, don’t stop
Round and round, up and down, around the clock
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (do it)
Friday, Saturday, Saturday to Sunday (do it)
Get, get, get, get, get with us, you know what we say, say
Party every day, p-p-p-party every day

And I’m feeling (woo-hoo)
That tonight’s gonna be a good night
That tonight’s gonna be a good night
That tonight’s gonna be a good, good night

A feeling (woo-hoo)
That tonight’s gonna be a good night
That tonight’s gonna be a good night
That tonight’s gonna be a good, good night (woo-hoo)

  1. I know the song but not the video. I agree with you completely.
There’s also another element, the director is ridiculing women by exaggerating the behaviour.

I’ve never liked drag artistes either and for the same reason. Back in the days of Danny La Rue, when even as a youngster, I could never understand why he was making fun of women and exaggerating what they looked like. Needless to say, I have no time for RuPaul’s Drag Race either.
Sorry, I’ve really gone off on one here!

    1. I think you have every right to Sue. I cannot reconcile the likes of this video with any of the various movements/groups/campaigns for women’s rights or equality, or even mutual respect and human decency. I’ll happily join your rant!

  2. I cannot even begin to express my emotions about videos like this. You are right. They are sexist and wish women would not bring themselves in a position to be seen as a sex object, but then you watch the red carpet photos and you know it will never change.

  3. Why Don’t You Do It In The Road would have worked out perfectly for this theme Peter, but I am happy that you went with Black Eyed Peas I Gotta Feeling, because even though I hared this song this was my first time watching the video.

  4. Good song, but I agree about the video. When I read the prompt a song came immediately to mind because it is so…sexy! Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin: “Je T’aimes, moi non plus”
    I really like the tune!

  5. First time I see this Black Eyed Peas video. I never really connotated this song with anything other than a night at the club, drinking, and dancing. Innuendo is there I see now and with the video, the connection is clear.

  6. I don’t participate in the challenge, but I couldn’t help starting to hum Marvin Gaye’s priceless “Sexual Healing.” As for the video. All I can say is that somehow between 1965 and now women seem to have become extremely confused about sexual behavior, emulating men’s reckless approach as if that was the goal. The video saddened me.

  7. Yikes and OOH! 👀 I think I’m too young and naive for this song and vid! 😮
    HA! I’m just teasing you! 😉 😀
    It’s definitely a peppy-get-up-and-do-something song!
And, well, there certainly are PLENTY of songs out there to share for this week’s prompt/category.
    (((HUGS)))
