Sticks and Stones

There can be beauty in broken, tender in hurt

When harsh words are spoken they’re mostly inert

It’s not always plain what people are saying

They may be in earnest or merely just playing

§

The trouble is people don’t think ere they speak

They utter such tripe and jump in with both feet

They consider no feelings, don’t choose their words well

It seems they are thinking we can all go to hell

§

Interpret what’s said in the way that suits you

No need to worry if you don’t have a clue

It’s true what they say about sticks and the stones

No-one’s harsh words will ever break bones!

  1. Excellent poem and truth, Peter! 🙂
I try to give people the benefit of the doubt…as sometimes people who hurt others are hurting themselves.
But, I have met those people who could definitely think before they speak. And in the past 4 or 5 years I’ve realized there are those people who seem to enjoy hurting others verbally. 😦 I will never understand them, but they are there. 😦 There are too many kind, gentle, encouraging, etc., people in my world for me to let those others become my focus…or let them drag me down. 🙂
Thank you for being a person who uses his words very well…and is kind, wise, considerate, uplifting, helpful, understanding, ETC! You are appreciated, Peter!!! 🙂

    1. Thank you Colleen. I’m pretty sure that I read that first line fairly recently and wrote it down because it struck me as almost perfect. I cannot remember where, when, or who, or even if it is my own, so I am loathe to claim it as such! If I did think of it myself then it was given to me somehow!
