Jim Adams’ Song Lyric Sunday gives us the chance to share familiar, and sometimes not so familiar, songs. This week the title or lyrics of the song should contain one of the words Cappuccino, Coffee, Espresso, Latte, or Mocha.
If you fancy sharing one of your favourite songs you can find out how to participate, and also listen to all the great entries, here.
The song I’ve chosen this week is Java Jive. I don’t suppose I’ll be alone in picking this!
Java Jive is a song written by Ben Oakland and Milton Drake in 1940 and most famously recorded by The Ink Spots. The lyrics speak of the singer’s love of coffee. The lyrics also reflect the slang of the day, including a reference to “Mr. Moto“, a Japanese film spy. The Ink Spots” 1940 recording of the song reached #17 on the US Pop charts and is considered by many to be the definitive version. The Song is also heard in the 1942 movie In This Our Life. This song is popular as an a cappella performance and below you will find:
- firstly the Ink Spots performing the song in 1940
- next The K Sisters, featuring singers Caitlin Beaupre, Katy Hedalen, Jennifer McLaren and pianist-vocalist Karen Lee-Morlang, Website: www.theksisters.com
- finally, Ringmasters – a Swedish barbershop quartet
Sit back and enjoy cuppa!
Lyrics
I love coffee, I love tea
I love the java jive and it loves me
Coffee and tea and the java and me
A cup, a cup, a cup, a cup, a cup (boy!)
I love java, sweet and hot
Whoops mr. moto, I’m a coffee pot
Shoot the pot and I’ll pour me a shot
A cup, a cup, a cup, a cup, a cup
Oh slip me a slug from the wonderful mug
And I’ll cut a rug just snug in a jug
A sliced up onion and a raw one
Draw one –
Waiter, waiter, percolator
I love coffee, I love tea
I love the java jive and it loves me
Coffee and tea and the java and me
A cup, a cup, a cup, a cup, a cup
Boston bean (soy beans)
Green bean (cabbage and greens)
I’m not keen about a bean
Unless it is a chili chili bean (boy!)
I love java sweet and hot
Whoops mr. moto I’m a coffee pot (yeah)
Shoot me the pot and I’ll pour me a shot
A cup, a cup, a cup (yeah)
Slip me a slug of the wonderful mug
‘an I’ll cut a rug just as snug in a jug
Drop a nickel in the pot joe
Takin’ it slow
Waiter, waiter, percolator
I love coffee, I love tea
I love the java jive and it loves me
Coffee and tea and the java and me
A cup, a cup, a cup, a cup, boy!

I vaguely remember the song from a very long time ago! But the cheeky Swedish lads amused me and I thought they made an excellent job of it!

I’m a tea drinker myself. But coffee does smell good! 🙂
Hope you are doing well today, Peter.

I limit myself to one coffee a day and much prefer tea anyway! Sadly, not so good today!

The Inkspots have my vote in this selection. I have always loved this song and the way it makes those drinks seem so seductive.
