Jim Adams’ Song Lyric Sunday gives us the chance to share familiar, and sometimes not so familiar, songs. This week the title or lyrics of the song must contain the word Long, Short, Small, or Tall.
If you fancy sharing one of your favourite songs you can find out how to participate, and also listen to all the great entries, here.
The song I’ve chosen this week contains the word LONG, although you’d be hard pushed to find it. In fact, the word appears twice. It is always referred to as “The Cups Song” and I’m offering you the Official Video version of Pitch Perfect’s “When I’m Gone”.
The singer is Anna Kendrick and, although she is probably best known for her role in this 2012 film Pitch Perfect she was singing long before this. Aside from starring in a few movie musicals over the past few years, Kendrick has even performed on a real life Broadway stage.
Here she is. I hope you enjoy it.
The Cups Song became very popular, especially as a project for amateur groups. If you search you will find many interesting recordings and they all have one thing in common. Everyone taking part is thoroughly enjoying themselves. Albania recorded a world record attempt in 2017 that is pretty spectacular to watch.
One of the best, to my mind, is a recording sung in Irish. I think the language is a real joy to listen to, it is lyrical even if you are being sworn at! The danger with adding this video is that I shall spend a good part of today finding other Irish lyrical songs. I hope you join me!
Cups (Pitch Perfect’s “When I’m Gone”)
I got my ticket for the long way ’round
Two bottle o’ whiskey for the way
And I sure would like some sweet company
And I’m leavin’ tomorrow, what do you say?
When I’m gone
When I’m gone
You’re gonna miss me when I’m gone
You’re gonna miss me by my hair
You’re gonna miss me everywhere, oh
You’re gonna miss me when I’m gone
I got my ticket for the long way ’round
The one with the prettiest of views
It’s got mountains, it’s got rivers
It’s got sights to give you shivers
But it sure would be prettier with you
When I’m gone
When I’m gone
You’re gonna miss me when I’m gone
You’re gonna miss me by my walk
You’re gonna miss me by my talk, oh
You’re gonna miss me when I’m gone

Great choice! I first came across this song with a version by Lulu and the Lampshades. It was used as the theme music for a BBC sitcom called Mum. Loved the series and the song!

I’ve just listened to that. Never heard of them before….I was expecting the 1960’s Lulu. Silly man!

They work really hard at keeping the language alive and so enjoy themselves whilst doing it!

Great song and a lovely video Peter. You always seem to come up with something amazing. This video has a long intro before the singing starts, but I could not take my eyes off of it. Does everyone know how to do that hand clapping and cup flipping thing, as I have never seen that before? When I’m Gone is also a very nice song.

Thank you Jim. I think it’s a young person thing, so that rules me out!
I have another long intro set aside for next week and you’ll need over 12 minutes to spare if you listen all the way through. I don’t expect many will do so!

I love this song. The first time I heard it was this version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6y1aOg_UO_A
I never saw the Anna Kendrick version – love it. I had seen the Irish one. My goodness there are so many versions, aren’t there? Not a bad thing.
Excellent choice!

Thanks Peter! Another new experience for me! I liked the Irish version although it was also nice to see quick shots of Albania which has always been a sort of mystery to me. Seems like fun for the kids . (The song, that is. I wouldn’t know about Albanis!)

Thanks Peter. I’ve had a life long interest in music and can’t believe I have never seen or heard this before. I googled it and came across a tutorial on YouTube – could be this week’s project!! I can’t decide between the two versions – each has its own merits.

I loved it from the first time I heard it. There is an Irish Language School (in Ireland of course, and of course I can’t remember the name of it) that produces videos of the students singing popular songs in Irish. The do this song, I love it. Such joy in the kids doing it.
