Jim Adams’ Song Lyric Sunday gives us the chance to share familiar, and sometimes not so familiar, songs. Today Jim has given us the task of choosing a song that has one or more of the the words Cruel, Evil, Horrible, Monster, or Wicked in the title, or lyrics. I like monsters, so have chosen a song called My California by Beth Hart. She normally dedicates this song to her husband and, when she finishes the song, he often comes on stage and gives her a kiss and a hug!
Beth is married to her road manager Scott Guetzkow, and currently resides in Los Angeles. Her manager is David Wolff. She has had a troubled life and has struggled with alcohol and drug addiction and bi-polar disorder, but has been sober for a number of years using religion and practicing transcendental meditation.
If you fancy sharing one of your favourite songs you can find out how to participate, and also listen to all the great entries, here.
First I offer you a recording from the performance “Live at The Royal Albert Hall” from 4 May 2018. The venue really is magnificent and all artists are thrilled to perform there. You may get carried away and watch the whole performance – I did!
Now here is the original recording from the album My California which was the fifth studio album by Beth Hart, released in 2010.
My California
Calling California is there anybody home
Hello California won’t you please pick up the phone
I wanna say I love you but I’m a million miles away
And I am thinking of you I miss you and LA
For you and you alone I’ll lay my monsters down
And we’ll watch the sun come up over California
For you and you alone I’ll find my way back home
And I’ll love you like the sun loves California
You’re my California
I have made you suffer left you waiting in the rain
While I was chasing demons in the deserts of my pain
You know me better than the poison in my veins
So my love remember when God forgets my name
For you and you alone I’ll lay my monsters down
And I’ll watch the sun come up over California
For you and you alone I’ll find my way back home
And I’ll love you like the sun loves California
My California
I wanna feel the ocean breeze
Let the waves wash over me
I’ll leave my winters in the sand
Hey California, California
For you and you alone I’ll lay my monsters down
And we’ll watch the sun come up over California
For you and you alone I’ll find my way back home
And I’ll love you like the sun loves California
California, you’re my California
My California, you’re my California

Beth Hart! One of my all time favs. She did a song called “I believe it”
Fantastic song.
Roughly 6 or so years ago (time flies so it could be more) a more famous country artist (maybe Reba McIntyre but honestly can’t remember) covered the song. She butchered it! It was horrible.
Beth Hart performs the song the country artist sang it.
There is a HUGE difference!
Love ❤️ this… now I get to listen to her music 🎶!

It’s quite a haunting sound. I hope the poor girl can stay grounded. I expect playing to audiences like that would be pretty heady. She’s lovely.
