Thank you to Jim Adams, who hosts Song Lyric Sunday and gives us the chance to share lots of familiar, and some not so familiar, songs.
If you fancy sharing one of your favourite songs you can find out how to participate, and also listen to all the great entries, here.
Apparently today’s prompt is about football. Who knew? Certainly not me. For one thing, when Jim talks football he is talking about that strange American game where lots of muscled men (do they have ladies football?) get dressed up in all sorts of armoured sports wear and run up and down a field that has been covered in lines and numbers. I do not have a clue. Neither do I have a clue when it comes to UK football, or soccer as it’s called in the USA. I am one of a strange breed of men who has no interest in football of any kind, and does not even know the rules of the game.
In fact, I Can’t Tell the Bottom From The Top, which just happens to be the song I’ve chosen to share with you. The song reached No 7 in the UK charts in May 1970 and featured the young Elton John on piano, yet again appearing on a recording of The Hollies.
There are two versions here, the first is a 1975 TV special from Switzerland with 30 minutes worth of live music. For those aficionados of The Hollies, you will see Tony Hicks playing bass as if it were a rhythm guitar. Lovely!
The second video is the original recording.
With every thought of you, I wanna shout aloud
And then I think about the love I had inside me
How you brought what’s inside out
I wanna tell the world of everything I’ve found
Somehow your love released a spring wound up inside me
You’ve turned my living upside-down
Am I standing on my head or on my heels?
Is it cloudy is it bright?
Is it day or is it night?
Am I wrong or am I right?
And is it real?
The spell you used the day you made me fall
Baby, now I know that love is no illusion
I’m upside-down but ten feet tall
Is it cloudy is it bright?
Is it day or is it night?
Am I wrong or am I right?
And is it real?
I didn’t know that love could move me so
You filled my life with love and much more besides
And you showed me which way to go
Am I standing on my head or on my heels?
Is it cloudy is it bright?
Is it day or is it night?
Am I wrong or am I right?
And is it real?
Am I standing on my head or on my heels?
Is it cloudy is it bright?
Is it day or is it night?
Am I wrong or am I right?
And is it real?
I don’t think I ever heard your choice before either. But what a hairdo!

Perfect song for the prompt Peter and you can never go wrong with the Hollies, although I never heard this one before. Your video is 30 minutes long and I may have to come back to it another day, but I did like the first song and I enjoyed the quality of this film.

Not familiar to me, either, but it’s a good one.

Love the way you turned the prompt to suit you. Very cleverly done!
I’m with you on the Football/Soccer subject, I haven’t a clue and fail to understand how all those people can waste their time and money watching a gang of men running up and down a field chasing a ball, I almost want to shout out ‘Fetch’!

Been there done that. New song but The Hollies always do it up right.

Hollies I’ve heard of but this song is new to me. Love the piano. Great pick.

GREAT song! New to me! Their music is still so relatable!
Plus, their song The Air That I Breathe is my favorite of their songs! The song…lyrics and tune just grabs my heart…I felt this exact way before. And their version of He Ain’t Heavy He’s My Brother always makes me cry. 🙂
1970’s music, fashions, hair, vibe…nothing better!
HUGS!!! 🙂
