Thank you to Jim Adams, who tirelessly hosts Song Lyric Sunday and gives us the chance to share lots of favourite songs.
There are always some songs that turn up that I am not familiar with, and it’s good to hear new music. Sometimes these become new favourites too.
If you fancy sharing one of your favourite songs you can find out how to participate, and also listen to all the great entries, here.
From the themes this week I’ve chosen to go with “Hurt”.
There is far too much hurt in the world. Sometimes we hurt people deliberately, sometimes we hurt unintentionally. Sometimes we even hurt others without realising we have done so.
Some people suffer hurt through illness, some through loss of loved ones, others because they feel hopeless, or neglected, or useless.
Some are hurt physically, many are hurt mentally.
We all will, at some time in our lives, hurt someone in some way. For any that I have hurt, I am truly sorry. For those that are hurting now, and for those who can see no end to their hurt, I offer love, and hugs, unconditionally.
Sadly, there is no doubt that at times Everybody hurts. Here is REM to sing the song. The final words are what matters: “You are not alone”.
Everybody Hurts
When your day is long
And the night
The night is yours alone
When you’re sure you’ve had enough
Of this life
Well hang on
Don’t let yourself go
‘Cause everybody cries
And everybody hurts sometimes
Sometimes everything is wrong
Now it’s time to sing along
When your day is night alone (hold on)
(Hold on) if you feel like letting go (hold on)
If you think you’ve had too much
Of this life
Well, hang on
‘Cause everybody hurts
Take comfort in your friends
Everybody hurts
Don’t throw your hand
Oh, no
Don’t throw your hand
If you feel like you’re alone
No, no, no, you’re not alone
If you’re on your own
In this life
The days and nights are long
When you think you’ve had too much
Of this life
To hang on
Well, everybody hurts sometimes
Everybody cries
And everybody hurts sometimes
And everybody hurts sometimes
So, hold on, hold on
Hold on, hold on
Hold on, hold on
Hold on, hold on
Everybody hurts
You are not alone

Well, Peter, your own words made me cry this morning and that was before I’d even started with the music!
Oh my goodness, Smokie, that’s another blast from my past. So, a little snippet for you.
We first met Smokie in the late seventies on the Isle of Man, Graham was working there for the summer and as was usual for summer seasons, we rented a house and the children and I accompanied him.
On a number of occasions the Members of Smokie came to watch Graham perform and we’d all get together in the bar afterwards, and seeing as we were virtual Yorkshire neighbours, Bradford/Leeds some of us became friends. More so with Terry Uttley and his wife.
One night we went out for dinner with the couple and also with us was John Coghlan from Staus Quo and his wife. Both these men as you would guess were high earners, and well out of our income league.
Anyway, the wine list arrived and one of the men chose a very expensive bottle of something white, for some reason the waiter poured Graham the taster, he declared it to be perfect (what did he know). Minutes later the other two men decided the wine was not up to standard, the waiter was summoned and the wine was sent back.
I was gobsmacked to say the least, I couldn’t believe the price of the wine in the first place let alone that they’d actually sent it back.
The wine cost over a £100 a bottle, yes £100 and that was in 1980! What would that be today?

Sorry for the upset Sue, and thanks for the memories. About £435 is the answer. It doesn’t bear thinking about really does it? I see that Terry Uttley is the only original band member left and they are still touring extensively.

Wow, £435! Thanks Peter.
I haven’t seen or heard of any of them in over thirty years. I’ve spent the last 24 hours trying to remember his wife’s name! Only just come back to me. I think it was Yvonne!

Thank you Peter. Your words were felt deeply this morning. The song was a great choice to accompany your words.

Thank you Colleen. I got a little bit carried away with the words, rather than concentrating on the music. However, it was, and is, said sincerely. There is far too much unnecessary hurt in the world, much of which could, and should, be alleviated.

I agree Peter, the hardest thing to accept is that it would take such a little bit of effort to eradicate a tremendous amount of hurt. Yet it goes unchanged.

This song is new to me. I like its message, that it’s okay to hurt, to cry. Thank you for sharing.

The “not being alone” is the theme for all of us; esp. in dark times. Great song.

I have been a fan of REM since I was a wee one. “Everybody Hurts” is a great choice because it just showcases how talented this band is. I love REM. And, for the “hurt” theme, I wish people of today would stop hurting other people with negative words and let’s start being positive.

I was hurting all weekend without my WIFI connection, I couldn’t watch Netflix, so I had to suffer through a lot of commercials.

Such lovely, thoughtful words in your introduction, Peter. Not everyone is able to recognise their own frailties & faults, but you definitely have an educated heart. I’m sure we’ve all been guilty of hurting others in some way sometimes, & equally, have been hurt too. Both are very unpleasant feelings, which are nigh on impossible to eradicate entirely. Such a wonderful choice of song, & lyrics..definitely my favourite by REM. I haven’t heard the Smokie version of “Love Hurts” in years..thank you for the memory, another beautiful song.
