I do enjoy Helen’s Song Lyric Sunday every week. I get to listen to some old favourites, but always encounter some songs that I have never heard before. Some I like, some are not to my taste, but I still enjoy the new experience.
You can listen to all this week’s entries by following the link above. Listen also happens to be the theme for this week.
This week I am offering a song by The Hollies. They are the group that I have seen “live” the most. They are still touring and still give great value for money.
“Listen to Me” is a 1968 single by The Hollies that was written by Tony Hazzard. It was the last Hollies single to feature Graham Nash in the group, and was released with the B-side “Do the Best You Can” on the Parlophone label. The song reached #11 on the UK singles chart in October 1968.
I’ve always wondered about the last line of each verse: “That you didn’t care about love.” It just does not fit in properly, and doesn’t seem to be what they sing. See what you think!
Listen to Me
Listen to me I’ll sing a song
To change your mind
Have you ever wondered why
When everything goes wrong
Nobody stops to lend a hand
Nobody seems to care
Then she looks you in the eye
And suddenly you’re strong
And very soon you realize
That you didn’t care about love
Listen to me I’ll sing a song
To change your mind
Your ears are deaf
Your mouth is dumb
Your eyes are blind
Listen to me and very soon
I think you’ll find
Somebody wants to help you
Somebody seems to care
And very soon you’ve forgotten
That you didn’t care about love
Does it hurt to realize
You’ve been acting very strange
Refusing to take the love she gives
Pretending you don’t care
Did it take you by surprise
To discover how you’d changed
How you forgot to remember
That you didn’t care about love
Listen to me I’ll sing a song
To change your mind
Your ears are deaf
Your mouth is dumb,
Your eyes are blind
Listen to me and very soon
I think you’ll find
Somebody wants to help you
Somebody seems to care
And very soon you’ve forgotten
That you didn’t care about love
Listen to me I’ll sing a song
To change your mind
Your ears are deaf
Your mouth is dumb,
Your eyes are blind
Listen to me and very soon
I think you’ll find
Somebody wants to help you
Somebody seems to care
And very soon you’ve forgotten
That you didn’t care about love
You didn’t care about love
You didn’t care about
You didn’t care about
You didn’t care about love

I love The Hollies music. Never knew Graham Nash was in the group until recently. He would be a hard one to find a replacement for with those harmonies he did with the lead singer. Never heard this one before. Good song!

I loved the Hollies but don’t remember this one. My car radio was on all the time so I’m wondering why I don’t know it.

Great choice, Peter. They had such a sound both pre and post Graham Nash. Watched a CSNY documentary one even that briefly touched on his exit from The Hollies to create CSN.

A great talent, Graham Nash!

Actually, because the person being spoken to in this song is someone who wouldn’t love another, the last line, “you didnbbt care about love,” in my opinion, fits.

It’s the fact that there are just not enough beats in the music to fit those words in, so they have to squash them in, in an unintelligible way. I agree that they fit grammatically quite well.
