Helen’s theme, for this week’s SLS, is “Fear”.
Helen seemed to think it would be a difficult choice for people to come up with, but, from what I’ve seen so far, there are some really great songs to listen to. Some I love, some I don’t. Some I’ve heard before, for some it is the first time of hearing. That’s what’s so good about Song Lyric Sunday. You get to hear new songs, and much loved songs. You get to meet new people, and to find out what their tastes in music are. You can see all the entries here, and maybe have a go yourself.
This week I’ve chosen a song by Lily Allen. She is the daughter of the actor Keith Allen (Keith Allen is an interesting character, having been expelled from school at age 13, being incarcerated in Borstal, at age 15, and appearing on Max Bygraves’ chorus line naked!), and was precocious from an early age, leaving school at 15, determined to become famous. She is not averse to swearing and there are a few words in this song that may offend delicate ears.
The song is called “The Fear”.
The Fear
I want to be rich and I want lots of money
I don’t care about clever, I don’t care about funny
I want loads of clothes and fuckloads of diamonds
I heard people die while they are trying to find them
And I’ll take my clothes off and it will be shameless
‘Cause everyone knows that’s how you get famous
I’ll look at the sun and I’ll look in the mirror
I’m on the right track, yeah, I’m on to a winner
I don’t know what’s right and what’s real anymore
I don’t know how I’m meant to feel anymore
When do you think it will all become clear
‘Cause I’m being taken over by the fear
Life’s about film stars and less about mothers
It’s all about fast cars and cussing each other
But it doesn’t matter ’cause I’m packing plastic
And that’s what makes my life so fuckin’ fantastic
And I am a weapon of massive consumption
And it’s not my fault, it’s how I’m programmed to function
I’ll look at the sun and I’ll look in the mirror
I’m on the right track, yeah, I’m on to a winner
I don’t know what’s right and what’s real anymore
I don’t know how I’m meant to feel anymore
When do you think it will all become clear
‘Cause I’m being taken over by the fear
Forget about guns and forget ammunition
‘Cause I’m killing them all on my own little mission
Now I’m not a saint but I’m not a sinner
Now everything is cool as long as I’m getting thinner
I don’t know what’s right and what’s real anymore
I don’t know how I’m meant to feel anymore
When do you think it will all become clear
‘Cause I’m being taken over by the fear

Thanks Peter, I hadn’t heard of her, and I particularly liked this stanza in the lyrics.
“I don’t know what’s right and what’s real anymore
I don’t know how I’m meant to feel anymore
When do you think it will all become clear
‘Cause I’m being taken over by the fear”

It’s probably something that we all go through at some stage in our lives. For some, unfortunately, they never seem to get past it!

Interesting song, and background information. Cute video, though. Reminds me a bit of Madonna’s Material Girl song. 🙂

Looks like she had fun making it. Haven’t we all skipped just like those guys at some time?

Okay, that song terrified me. Not sure if it was the dancing gift boxes or the guys skipping in circles! LOL! Fun choice, and I agree – it does have a ‘Material Girl’ feel. 😀

I know Lily Allen but hadn’t heard this song and I thought it was brilliant! Tongue in cheek, poppy innocence with an underlying satirical bite – just loved it – great choice Peter :O) x

A few years back, during some winter days, I came across Lily Allen and her songs. I love her. I don’t recall this song so it’s ‘new’ to me.

I hope you danced along to the music Colleen.

My daughter introduced me to Lily Allen forever ago, but I’d totally forgotten how much I like her. Thanks so much for the reminder. I loved this song!
